Building A Global Brand Takes Time - Part 1

I have been in business for the last 14 years and been taken to school about building a global brand.

I'm still learning by the way.

What I have recognised is, it takes T-I-M-E.

Here is the first lesson I learned:

Knowing My Worth Takes Time

When I first ventured into business, I didn't know how much to charge for my services. I was new to the market and definitely green. Someone who knew of my transition into business hired me. They were my first client and because of the job I did, they referred me to others in their network. I first obtained clients via word of mouth. What paid it forward for me was my reputation and the value I added. It still does today.

The next step I had to take was to be seen and heard. Word of mouth was working for me, but I had to get good at pitching my ideas, introducing myself and speaking publicly.

Did I mention it was terrifying for me to talk to strangers?

You see, while I was growing up I didn't consider myself the outgoing and outspoken type, but I had to learn to show up and let my presence be heard. It's one thing to demonstrate my value, but I learnt to take it another level by being able to communicate it.

I learnt the strategy of being seen, before being heard. This is something I wasn't accustomed doing, being seen. I learnt early on in business, that people do business with people. I could no longer hide behind my business name.

One of my mentors always encouraged me with this. "God made you beautiful for a reason. When you speak, they will listen readily to what you have to say because of your physical beauty." Who wouldn't want to listen to handsome or beautiful face? I know I would listen to a handsome face.

So I have learned to dress in a way that says I am in leadership, I like colour and I am approachable. Pumps and pearls are my go to.

Overtime it became clear I was to become a person of value and someone who adds value.

Knowing My Value has been the core of everything that I do.

It is a necessary foundation upon which my global brand is being built on.
